The weather forecast over the past couple of weeks has repeatedly shown that morning humidity in Toronto has regularly begun to reach 95-100%. Humidity, the amount of moisture present in the air, plays a significant role in our overall health and well-being. Whether it’s high or low, both extremes can have a profound impact on our bodies. Understanding these effects is crucial for maintaining a healthy living environment and minimizing potential health risks.

High humidity health challenges. 

Body temperature regulation

When the air is saturated with moisture, our bodies’ ability to cool down through the evaporation of sweat is hindered. This can lead to an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly in hot climates. The body’s natural cooling mechanism becomes less effective, making it harder to regulate body temperature. Prolonged exposure to high humidity, especially when combined with high temperatures, can put a strain on the cardiovascular system and lead to dehydration.

Dry air can cause skin to become dry and itchy, while also leading to irritation of the eyes and respiratory passages. Prolonged exposure to low humidity can contribute to the development or exacerbation of respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. In addition, dry air can increase susceptibility to respiratory infections as it may compromise the body’s natural defense mechanisms in the respiratory system.

Mitigating the effects.

High humidity levels

To reduce the effects of humidity on health, it’s important to take proactive measures. In high-humidity conditions, staying hydrated is crucial. It’s also beneficial to use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels in indoor spaces, especially in areas prone to dampness such as basements and bathrooms. Ensuring proper ventilation and airflow can also help manage humidity levels.

Low humidity levels

Conversely, in low-humidity conditions, using a humidifier can help add moisture to the air, creating a more comfortable indoor environment. Proper hydration is equally important in dry conditions, as the body tends to lose more moisture through respiration and perspiration.

Ultimately, paying attention to your body’s response to changing humidity levels is key. Being mindful of symptoms such as excessive sweating, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, or dryness can indicate that humidity levels are impacting your health.
