Bioelectric impedance measurements represent a synthesis of old and new non-invasive technologies and techniques.
The EIS system applies a minute electric current to the body through surface electrodes. The resulting electrical pulse passes through the body and is detected by different surface electrodes placed elsewhere on the body.
A drop in voltage occurs as the current encounters impedance or resistance inherent in the fluids and tissues it passes through. The current passes through the body’s physiological “compartments” – the bloodstream, intracellular space, the lymphatic system, the interstitial space, and more.
The voltage drop provides indirect information about the physical properties of the compartment(s) that the current passed through.
